Key Characteristics

Twinning Habit: The cross shape is a result of a phenomenon called "penetration twinning," where two separate crystals intergrow.

90-degree angle: Often called a Roman or Greek cross.

60-degree angle: Known as an X-shaped or Saint Andrew's cross.

Color & Luster: It typically appears in shades of dark brown, brownish-black, or reddish-brown. Its luster can vary from vitreous (glassy) to earthy or dull, especially in weathered specimens.


Composition: It is a silicate mineral primarily composed of iron, aluminum, and silica.Hardness: It is quite hard, measuring between 7.0 and 7.5 on the Mohs scale.Lore and SignificanceThe name staurolite is derived from the Greek words stauros, meaning "cross," and lithos, meaning "stone.
