This is a charming and historically resonant printed postcard depicting the iconic Forth Bridge in Scotland, the celebrated cantilever railway bridge spanning the Firth of Forth near Edinburgh. The sepia-toned image captures the bridge's dramatic steel lattice structure from a side angle, with a small steamboat visible on the water below and bare winter trees in the foreground. Captioned 'Forth Bridge' along the bottom edge, it is printed in Great Britain and carries catalog number 11837. The card is a divided back printed lithograph dating to the Divided Back era, postmarked October 11, 1915 — during the height of World War One — from Bologna, Italy. It was addressed to Contessa V. Nasetti at Castello d'Uzzano, Greve, Chianti, Toscana, Italy, a notable Tuscan address that adds aristocratic provenance to the piece. The sender, signing as Edgar, writes apologetically about missing the Contessa's birthday due to being 'very busy lately' with 'not one moment of peace,' a poignant sentiment given the wartime context. The card bears a red King George V one penny stamp, partially obscured by the Bologna postmark cancellation. The message fills both the communication space and the left margin, with additional notes crowded along the top. The Forth Bridge itself, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2015, is a perennially popular subject among topographical postcard collectors.
