A 5.5x3.5" vintage RPPC photo postcard from the estate of a vintage automobile postcard collector. This was part of a huge collection of antique postcards.
Photo Overview
This real photo postcard captures four well-dressed passengers seated in an early brass-era Franklin touring automobile, parked before a large wooden barn or carriage house. The car is identified in period pencil on the reverse as a Franklin, the pioneering air-cooled automobile manufactured by the H.H. Franklin Manufacturing Company of Syracuse, New York. The distinctive rounded hood and vertical honeycomb-style radiator shell, along with the wood-spoke artillery wheels, right-hand steering, brass acetylene headlamps and side lamps place this as an approximately 1906 to 1908 Franklin Model D or similar four-cylinder touring car.
The group includes a driver in a duster and derby hat at the wheel, a younger man in a cap and heavy overcoat beside him, a woman seated in the rear tonneau, and a distinguished older gentleman in a bowler and dark coat. The scene has the feel of a proud family or owner posing with a prized and expensive new motor car during the earliest years of American automobiling. A wonderful early motoring image with strong appeal to brass-era and Franklin marque collectors.
