A rare and historically significant signed cabinet-style photograph of Frederick Huntington Gillett (1851–1935), inscribed and signed in January 1925 — his final month as Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, on the eve of his transition to the U.S. Senate.
Gillett served as both the 42nd Speaker of the United States House of Representatives (1919–1925) and as a U.S. Senator from Massachusetts (1925–1931), making him one of the few figures of the era to hold both posts. The photo was signed from the height of his power, at the close of a remarkable 32-year congressional career.
The photograph is mounted on card stock and printed on official letterhead from The Speaker's Rooms, House of Representatives, Washington, D.C. The handwritten inscription reads:
"To Hon. Harry H. Williams / with the sincere regard of his friend / Jany. 1925 / Fred H. Gillett"
The timing could not be more significant. Gillett's final election as Speaker in 1923 required three days and nine ballots — the only time in the 20th century the House failed to elect a Speaker on the first roll call.
