BACKGROUND: Gay Liberation Front (GLF) wasformed in Greenwich Village, New York City in 1969, immediately after the Stonewall riots, bringing a new wave of people into the LGBTQ political activism that had been growing throughout the 1960s. A new constellation of influences informed this generation, including the peace and student movements, the counterculture, and the Black Panthers and Third World Liberation Front struggles. The GLF quickly expanded across the U.S. and internationally, transforming the course of LGBTQ communities and American politics by changing the terms of LGBTQ struggles from equality to liberation.The GLF is considered by most to be the most impactfulLGBTQ civil rights organization in history.Countlessfuture organizations were formed by its members including the Gay Activists Alliance (GAA), Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (STAR) ACT UP, the Lesbian Avengers, Queer Nation, Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, and the Radical Radishes, among others.
