O'CONNELL STREET DUBLIN O'Connell Street is Dublin's main thoroughfare and one of the widest streets in the world. The General Post Office was completed in 1818 from designs by Francis Johnston. Built of granite it has six fluted columns. The pediment is surmounted by a grand Ionic portico of Portland Stone consisting of statues representing Hibernia Mercury and Fidelity. It was here that the building was the headquarters of the Irish Volunteers of Ireland and was proclaimed in 1916 when the Republic of Ireland was proclaimed.
