George F. Edmunds (1828–1919) signed cut autograph on period cardstock. Edmunds was one of the most important Republican senators of the Reconstruction and Gilded Age eras, serving as United States Senator from Vermont from 1866 to 1891.
A highly respected constitutional lawyer and political leader, Edmunds chaired the Senate Judiciary Committee and played a major role in some of the defining political battles of the late 19th century. He was deeply involved in the impeachment proceedings against President Andrew Johnson and became nationally known for his anti-corruption positions and legal scholarship.
Edmunds was also the author of the famous Edmunds Act of 1882, federal legislation aimed at suppressing polygamy in the Utah Territory. During the 1880 Republican National Convention, he was considered a serious presidential contender alongside figures such as James G. Blaine and Ulysses S. Grant.
Authentic signatures from major Gilded Age senators and constitutional figures remain desirable among collectors of political, presidential, and Americana autographs.
