Harry Houdini(bornErich Weiszin 1874) was a legendary escape artist known for daring stunts like breaking out of handcuffs, straightjackets, and the infamousChinese Water Torture Cell. Born in Hungary and raised in Wisconsin and New York, he rose to fame in vaudeville with acts that defied belief.
Outside the stage, he flew planes, starred in silent films, and exposed fake psychics—clashing with believers likeSir Arthur Conan Doyle. Despite a pact with his wife to communicate from the afterlife, no ghostly message ever came.
He died onHalloween 1926from a ruptured appendix. His props now belong to magicianDavid Copperfield, but Houdini’s legend remains unchained.
