Deichstrasse is the city’s oldest surviving street; its canal-side houses combined warehouse, office, and home, and the Great Fire of 1842 ignited here yet spared the southern block seen on this view.
The ensemble dodged both the 1943 fire-bombing and a 1970s highway scheme—citizens voted to preserve and restore the street, keeping Old Hamburg alive amid modern glass towers.
Completed in 1874, St Nikolai’s 147 m spire dethroned Strasbourg Cathedral as the world’s highest structure; the church now stands roofless as a memorial to wartime victims.
