He Tried For A High Note Comic Caricature Singing Piano Humor 1912 Vintage Postcard
We have all heard singing so bad it makes you want to throw things but the neighbors in this non-topographical comic postcard actually went ahead and did it. The front shows a wildly chaotic scene where a skinny gentleman trying his absolute hardest to hit a high note gets completely walloped in the back of the head by a glass bottle flying through the window. The bottle is accompanied by a stray shoe an empty tin can and a rogue head of cabbage just to ensure the musical review was fully understood by the singer and his terrified piano accompanist. Condition wise this piece shows some typical corner rounding and light edge wear along with a neat green geometric border. The back features a green one cent George Washington stamp an Avon Illinois postmark from April 1912 and a friendly handwritten message from Ira letting Gerald know he is fine and dandy and able to eat three meals a day.
As an authentic vintage piece, this item may show typical signs of age, which can include minor edge wear, soft or bumped corners, slight yellowing, and light surface blemishes. Please carefully examine all provided high-resolution photos for the most accurate and definitive representation of the item\'s condition prior to purchasing. Trivia Corner
Take a look at the barrage of trash flying through the window. In early twentieth century vaudeville and comic strips throwing old shoes tin cans and rotten vegetables at performers was the universal visual shorthand for absolute disapproval. The specific inclusion of a cabbage or lettuce head was a classic comedy trope rooted in the actual rowdy audiences of the nineteenth century who would occasionally bring spoiled produce to theaters just in case the act was terrible.
