DESCRIPTION
Impressive large handcrafted Mexican Talavera tibor / ginger jar from Puebla, Mexico, attributed to the Hernandez artisan family workshop.
The jar features a classic and highly decorative cobalt blue-on-white glazed design, drawing from the centuries-old ceramic traditions associated with Puebla.
Standing approximately 18" tall with its lid and measuring approximately 9" across the base, this is a substantial decorative piece with excellent presence.
In Mexico, this traditional covered vessel form is commonly known as a tibor. The form traces its influence to Asian covered jars brought to Mexico through early trade routes and subsequently became an important form in Puebla's ceramic tradition.
The jar is signed on the bottom, identifying its artisan origin.
The combination of crisp cobalt blue decoration against the white glazed ground gives the piece a timeless appearance that works particularly well in Spanish Colonial, Mexican, Mediterranean, traditional, coastal, Southwestern, and eclectic interiors.
This example appears to have seen very little previous use and remains in excellent, nearly new-looking condition with no notable damage.
