History if the Second Army Corps by Francis A. Walker - First Edition 1886
The Second Corps of the Army of the Potomac was a key Union commandin the Eastern Theater, active from March 1862 to June 1865, participating innearly every major battle and sustaining some of the highest casualties in theCivil War. The Second Corps was officially organized on March 21, 1862,with Brigadier General Edwin Vose Sumner as its first commander. Its includeddivisions of Brigadier Generals Israel B. Richardson, John Sedgwick, andLouis Blenker.
The corps’ first major engagement was the Battle ofSeven Pines, where Sumner’s leadership helped prevent a Union rout. Duringthe Seven Days Battles, the Second Corps was engaged at Savage’sStation and Glendale, with Sedgwick’s division heavily involved inthe fighting.
The Second Corps fought in nearly every significant battlein the Eastern Theater, including:
- Peninsula Campaign
- Antietam
- Fredericksburg
- Chancellorsville
- Gettysburg
- Overland Campaign
- Siege of Petersburg
- Appomattox Campaign
It was renowned for its hard fighting and high casualtyrates, with 35 of the 100 Union regiments that lost the most men in battlebelonging to the Second Corps. The corps saw several commanders, including:

- Maj. Gen. John Sedgwick
- Maj. Gen. Winfield S. Hancock
