Holy Trinity Monastery Jordanville New Martyrs of Russia Mounted Orthodox Icon
Era: Mid to late 20th Century
Original mounted devotional icon from Holy Trinity Monastery, Jordanville, New York, depicting the New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia.
The elaborate composition presents Christ above a vast assembly of Russian Orthodox martyrs, hierarchs, clergy, monastics and faithful associated with the persecution of the Russian Orthodox Church.
The image is associated with the Jordanville iconographic tradition of Archimandrite Cyprian (Kyprian) Pyzhov, one of the monastery's most important iconographers. Holy Trinity Monastery identifies Fr. Cyprian as the master iconographer whose disciples continued its school of Russian iconography, and monastery sources describe him as the founder of what became known as the “Jordanville School” of iconography. Inscriptions
The prominent Church Slavonic inscription across the upper portion identifies the subject as the Synaxis/Assembly of the Holy New Martyrs of Russia.
Numerous small inscriptions appear vertically along both sides of the composition, corresponding to the saints and martyrs represented in the icon.
Additional Church Slavonic/Russian inscription text appears along the lower border.
Because of the extremely small lettering, the individual names and entire lower inscription have not been transcribed in this listing.
Construction
This is a printed icon mounted to a wooden plaque, rather than an original hand-painted icon.
The image has a glossy/protective surface coating with burgundy-painted edges. The reverse retains its original paper monastery identification label:
HOLY TRINITY MONASTERY
JORDANVILLE, NEW YORK 13361
Original metal hanging eyelet/hardware remains attached to the back.
Holy Trinity Monastery continues to produce this New Martyrs of Russia subject and describes its mounted printed icons as hand-crafted by monks at the monastery Icon Studio and preserved beneath a protective coating with burgundy-painted sides and backs. Holy Trinity Church Supplies & Bookstore
