Hotel China Butterfly - Haviland China Co. - Late 1870\'s to early 1880\'s Era - Rare & Very Beautiful - China Butter Pat - Hand Painted
Offered for your consideration is a very rare late 1870\'s to early 1880\'s era top pattern 3-9/16\" wide china butter pat made by the Haviland China Co. in Limoges for use in an American hotel, restaurant, or even historic transportation setting.
The backstamp on this piece is the simple H&Co without any other marks or lines under it representing it from the 1876 to the very early 1880\'s era.
This is a great example of early fine Limoges hotel china - restaurant china with the hand-painted butter fly in the center that looks absolutely stunning and very elegant!
This butterpat would have been used in a hotel, restaurant, upscale club, or other commercial establishment prior to large onset of thicker commercial china styles introduced by Syracuse, Buffalo, Shenango, Iroquois, etc.
Haviland also made a significant amount of late 19th to early 20th Century railroad and steamship china too for American companies. Though this china was not as thick and made for durability as what became the mainstay of vintage commercial china restaurant ware, the Haviland style was used by many hotel\'s, restaurants, railroads and steamship companies. Their china also represented \"fine service\" and their patterns always looked good. Normally though, most of their 19th-20th Century pieces were not top marked; backstamped at best.
As is the case with this piece, it appears factory hand painted original overglazed, as too the gold pin-striping and colors of the butterfly also match the outerboader. During this era too, butterflies on china were very popular; especially, with the ladies for luncheon, afternoon tea, or dinner.
An amazing addition to your vintage butter pat collection, hotel china, restaurant china, restaurantware, or historic Haviland botany - botanical collection.
Has a pin head size dimple at the eight o\'clock position. Otherwise in pretty good condition. Please study the photos and feel free to message me with questions.
