William McKinley and Garret Hobart 44-Star Presidential Campaign Street Banner

A spectacular and exceptionally large presidential campaign street banner supporting Republican candidates William McKinley for president and Garret Hobart for vice president in the election of 1896. Measuring an impressive 103 by 173 inches, this monumental textile was designed to be suspended across a street, with a hoist and rope attachments at the upper corners.
The banner takes the form of a large 44-star American flag, with the stars arranged in vertical rows. A 14-inch-high canvas panel extends along the outer edge and is boldly inscribed“McKinley & Hobart”on each side, allowing the political message to be prominently displayed when the banner was suspended overhead.
Constructed of loosely woven cotton or bunting material, the banner is an impressive example of the enormous patriotic campaign displays used to decorate American streets during the late nineteenth century. Its remarkable scale and purpose-built construction make it particularly evocative of the spectacle surrounding presidential campaigns of the period.
