What it is & maker: Original full page color wood engraving titled “Indian Warfare The Village” by Charles Graham, removed from the October 3 1885 issue of Harpers Weekly, A Journal of Civilization. The print shows a Native village on the Plains along a river, with tipis, figures, and distant landscape, printed in color on period newsprint.
Why it matters: Harpers Weekly was the leading illustrated news magazine of the Gilded Age, and its color plates are scarcer than the usual black and white engravings. This image sits in the 1880s visual coverage of so called Indian Wars and Western frontier life, appealing to collectors of Native American imagery, Western Americana, and nineteenth century illustration.
Condition: Good vintage condition for 1880s newsprint. Overall even cream to tan toning with some scattered foxing and handling marks. Edges show mild wear and small nicks confined to the margins; image area retains strong color and impression with no major tears, losses, or repairs noted. See photos. Review photos closely for exact condition.
What’s included: One loose original Harpers Weekly sheet only, full page image, approximately 16 x 10.5 in, unmounted and unframed.
Shipping: Ships flat in a protective sleeve with board backing in a rigid mailer, tracked and packed carefully.
