The Komainu are traditional Japanese guardian figures often seen at the entrances of Shinto shrines. They are commonly displayed as a pair, standing on the left and right sides of the entrance to symbolically protect the sacred space. Komainu are sometimes described in English as “Japanese guardian lions” or “lion-dog guardians,” although they are a uniquely Japanese cultural motif with a long history connected to shrine architecture and spiritual protection.
