This is an original, mid-1930s "master reference working print" produced by the famous Culver Pictures Service in New York City. The image features a beautifully composed, candid Edwardian scene: two women holding a parasol/umbrella, viewed from behind as they walk down a rural dirt road in a wooded area.
Around 1935–1940, D. Jay Culver (founder of Culver Pictures) purchased a mysterious lot of turn-of-the-century glass-plate negatives from a dealer. At the time, he did not know who the photographer was—the only clue was the name "Mrs. Bernard" written on the original storage boxes. Culver’s staff struck reference prints on heavy cardstock to catalog the collection. Years later, photo-historians identified the anonymous photographer as Jeanette Bernard (1863–1934), a pioneering female amateur photographer who beautifully captured middle-class life in Winfield Junction (modern-day Woodside), Queens, New York, between 1900 and 1920. Her work is now highly regarded and preserved in institutions like the George Eastman Museum.
