Julia Lathrop Signed RPPC Postcard Hull House Chicago IL Progressive Era antique: $50.00
Historical SignificanceUp for sale is a rare, historically significant piece of American Progressive Era history: an antique framed portrait of Julia Clifford Lathrop.Lathrop was a towering figure in social reform and a prominent resident of Chicago\'s famous Hull-House alongside Jane Addams. In 1912, President William Howard Taft appointed her as the first Bureau Chief of the United States Children\'s Bureau. This appointment made her the first woman to ever head a U.S. federal bureau. She spent her life fighting child labor and successfully lowering infant mortality rates.Photograph & Signature - The Photograph: This is a genuine Real Photo Postcard (RPPC) measuring 5 ¾\" x 3 ¾\". It captures a classic profile portrait of Lathrop with an elegant Edwardian hairstyle and lace collar.
- The Autograph: The photo features a signature at the bottom reading \"Julia C. Lathrop\". It appears to be a hand-signed, live-ink autograph rather than a mass-produced print facsimile. It was likely signed by Lathrop at a convention, political speech, or Hull-House function.
- The Frame: Housed in an authentic, turn-of-the-century dark wooden frame with its original glass, measuring 9 ¾\" x 7 ¾\".
- Provenance:.PROVENANCE / HISTORICAL NOTE:
The back of the frame features a vintage handwritten inscription reading: \"The property of Mary M. Bartelme.\" Judge Mary M. Bartelme (1866–1954) was Illinois\' first female judge, a legendary Chicago social reformer, and a close associate of Julia Lathrop and Jane Addams. Bartelme and Lathrop worked closely together to pioneer the Cook County Juvenile Court system. This photograph was a personal artifact belonging to Judge Bartelme, cementing its historical authenticity and direct link to the peak of the Progressive Era social reform movement in Chicago. - Condition Note: The antique wood-pulp backing paper is original and shows natural flaking and age-related brittleness. Modern blue painter\'s tape has been applied to the edges by a previous owner to keep the flaking backing secure. The wire hanging mount is original and intact. The photograph inside remains crisp, clean, and beautifully preserved under the glass.
This is a fantastic artifact perfect for collectors of Women\'s Suffrage history, Progressive Era memorabilia, Hull-House ephemera, or early American photography.Shipping & HandlingWill be securely packed with ample bubble wrap and tracking to ensure the antique glass and frame arrive safely. Please view all photos closely to judge condition for yourself.
