Kuba Bwoom Helmet Mask — Beaded & Cowrie Adorned, DR Congo
A heavily adorned helmet mask in the tradition of the Kuba peoples of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Central Africa. The Bwoom is one of the most recognized mask forms in Central African art, representing the commoner or royal rival figure in the triad of the Kuba kingdom's royal masquerade tradition.
This example carries a dense multimedia overlay in classic Kuba fashion: rows of sky-blue and white glass trade beads arranged in bold geometric V-formations across the prominent forehead and crown; hand-stitched cowrie shells — traditional symbols of wealth and prestige — across the brow, sides, and chin panel; and hammered metal sheet patches applied to the nose and cheeks, of the type meant to catch firelight during ceremonial dances. The crown is finished with raffia cloth and remnants of animal hide with fur.
Carved from a single block of hardwood, the underlying sculpture retains the powerful bulging forehead and broad nose characteristic of the form. The interior bears an old painted inventory number ("118Z40"), suggesting time in an earlier collection or dealer stock. Presented on a custom black metal display stand, which is included.

CONDITION REPORT
Good antique ethnographic condition — please review all photos carefully as they form part of the condition report. Rich dark patina to exposed wood. Beadwork and cowrie attachments are largely intact, with minor loosening to the fiber threads, scattered shell staining, and oxidation to the metal sheeting. The hide and raffia at the crown show losses, fraying, and material softening. Old painted inventory number to interior. Sold as found, as photographed.
