A wonderful piece of Anglo-Jewish scholarly history: an original handwritten postcard by Rev. Morris Rosenbaum (1871–1947), one of the most respected rabbinic scholars of English Jewry in the early 20th century.
About Rev. Morris Rosenbaum
Rosenbaum served as Minister (Rabbi) of the Borough Synagogue in London from 1905 to 1936, a 31-year tenure during which he became a central figure of the historic South London Jewish community. In 1917 he authored The History of the Borough Synagogue, a work still cited today by genealogists and historians researching Anglo-Jewry, tracing the congregation back to its founding in 1800.
Rosenbaum\'s most enduring legacy, however, is as co-translator (alongside Dr. Abraham M. Silbermann) of Pentateuch with Targum Onkelos, Haphtaroth and Rashi\'s Commentary, Translated into English and Annotated — the landmark five-volume work published in London between 1929 and 1934. Universally known to this day among students of Torah as \"Silberman\'s Rashi,\" this translation remains, nearly a century later, one of the most widely used and cited English editions of Rashi\'s commentary on the Chumash in print — a fixture on synagogue and yeshiva bookshelves across the English-speaking Jewish world.

Postally used and postmarked Walworth, S.E., 22 July 1921, franked with a King George V ½d green and 1d red stamp, this card was sent by Rosenbaum from his post at the Borough Synagogue Chambers, Heygate Street, S.E.17, to fellow clergyman Rev. A. Mishcon of 1 Helix Road, S.W.2. The message offers a charming window into the meticulous scholarship that would define his later magnum opus: Rosenbaum queries a bibliographic citation, discussing the German-Jewish periodical Monatsschrift für Geschichte und Wissenschaft des Judentums and an article by historian Martin Philippson on Jewish volunteers in the German Wars of Liberation of 1813–1814 — exactly the kind of careful textual cross-checking that underpinned his celebrated translation work less than a decade later.
A rare surviving piece of correspondence, in his own hand, from one of the most important names in English-language Rashi scholarship — a wonderful addition for any serious Judaica collector, rabbinic autograph collector, or admirer of Torah scholarship in translation.
