PRINCIPALITY OF LIECHTENSTEIN – ORDER OF MERIT – COMMANDER CROSS
A scarce and highly attractive Liechtenstein Order of Merit Commander Cross, from the Fürstlich Liechtensteinischer Verdienstorden, the principal order of merit of the Principality of Liechtenstein.
The Order of Merit was established in 1937 by Prince Franz I and was created to recognize distinguished service to the Principality. The original order consisted of five classes, including the Commander Cross (Komturkreuz) and Commander Cross with Star.
This example features the characteristic blue enamel cross with gilt detailing and crowned central monogram, suspended from the neck ribbon associated with the Commander grade.

A SCARCE EUROPEAN STATE DECORATION
The Liechtenstein Order of Merit is an especially interesting collecting field because of the Principality\'s small size and the comparatively limited number of decorations encountered on the secondary market.
Original first-type Commander Crosses from 1937–1967 are documented in specialist European sales. A Künker example described as a first-type Commander Cross, gilt and enamelled and mounted on a prepared neck ribbon, realized €240 against a €150 estimate.
Specialist sale catalogues also document Liechtenstein Commander badges in gilt/silver-gilt and enamel, demonstrating the collector demand for these relatively scarce European orders.
