Louis Thiers - Portrait - 1873 Steel Engraving

Steel Portrait with in-plate Signature from the 1873 edition of PORTRAIT GALLERY OF EMINENT MEN & WOMEN OF EUROPE & AMERICA by EVERT A. DUYCHINCK

Louis Adolphe Thiers, (1797-1877), was a French statesman and historian, prominent under the July Monarchy and in the early days of the Third Republic. Thiers was born April 18, 1797, in Marseille, and was educated in law at the University of Aix-en-Provence. In 1821 he went to Paris, where he embarked on a career in journalism and joined other liberal writers in attacking the reactionary government of King Charles X. Thiers became famous with the publication of his ten-volume History of the French Revolution (1823-27; trans. 1895). In 1830 he was elected a deputy, and his articles in the newspaper National, which he joined in founding, helped bring about the July Revolution; he himself took an active part in the uprising. After the overthrow of King Charles and the installation of King Louis Philippe, Thiers served in several cabinet posts before becoming premier for six months in 1836; he resigned because of displeasure with his aggressive foreign policy and became a leader of the opposition. In 1840 he was again summoned to office as president of the Council and as foreign minister; he resigned after eight months and worked on his 20-volume History of the Consulate and the Empire (1840-55; trans. 1845-62). After the deposition of Louis Philippe in 1848, Thiers supported Prince Louis Napoleon, later Emperor Napoleon III, as president. Opposing Napoleon\'s coup d\'état of 1851, he was arrested and then banished for several months.

HISTORICAL INFORMATION: Daniel Webster (January 18, 1782 – October 24, 1852) was a leading American statesman during the nation\'s Antebellum Period. He first rose to regional prominence through his defense of New England shipping interests. His increasingly nationalistic views and the effectiveness with which he articulated them led Webster to become one of the most famous orators and influential Whig leaders of the Second Party System. I will send a combined invoice reflecting your savings. The Nature of Prints & Engravings: It was not until the 20th century that prints were commonly produced for the print itself. Prior to this, virtually all prints (and engravings) were produced as illustrations to be included in a manuscript, book, newspaper, or pamphlet. Therefore, a vast majority of original prints have been over the years removed from these original sources. Prints are produced using many different techniques: relief printing (woodcut & wood engraving), intaglio printing (steel & copper plate engraving, drypoint, aquatint, etc), and planographic printing (lithography, serigraphy, inkjet, laser, etc.). While the commercial value of a print depends on such factors as age, rarity, and condition, the real value of a print is its tie to its history and/or its esthetic beauty.
