Lt-Gen Sir Edmond Elles (1848-1934) Signed Letter RE: Tank Commander Hugh Ellis:
$75.00

1931 Hand-Signed Letter by Lt. General Sir Edmond Roche Elles

9" X 7" multifold letter in very good condition with light creasing

Two-page handwritten letter dated September 2, 1931, on personal "Clovelly, Merrow" stationery. Written by General Sir Edmond Elles (1848–1934). In this insightful letter, the 83-year-old General reflects on his long career, humorously compares himself to Johnnie Walker whiskey "still going strong", and mentions his regret at being too old to fight in the Great War. Notably, he proudly mentions the wartime service of his son, Sir Hugh Elles (1880-1945) the famed first commander of the Tank Corps.

Dear Sir

In compliance with your request of 18th August to send you my autograph I send you these few lines.

Your list of autographs will be of some historical interest when the authors have all passed away.

My career has been a long one as I am now in my 84th year and like "Johnny Walker" Whiskey still going strong with a career of 25 years public work in England after 38 years Indian service.

My only regret is that after working for years on the National Service League I was too old at 67 to take part in the Great War of 1914 and had to content

myself with being Chairman of the Surrey Territorials.

My son Sir Hugh's fine services during the War were a great happiness to me.

Yrs truly

W. Elles / General

Glenn Walton Blodgett Esq

U.S.A.
