MID 19TH CENTURY SAILING SHIPS & VERSE SAMPLER BY BARBARA BOWNESS - 1848 For Sale

Mid 19th century linen and wool work sampler by Barbara Bowness aged 12 - 1848. This sampler is just delightful with neat stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with three rows of alphabet letters and numbers with a flower flanked by a bird and dog to the right of the last row which is then underlined with a deep strawberry border. The middle section of the linen contains the following verse which has a charming image of a sailing ship to either side, both with a bird perched on top

The lower section of the linen is stitched with Barbara\'s details which are a bit tricky to read due to the colour of thread she has used. The date of 1848 is stitched centrally beneath with a fruit basket to either side, then the whole piece is surrounded by a geometric border pattern.
The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, very slightly darker in places with some minor undulation to the lower section. The sampler is behind glass so I\'m not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the wool appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. The sampler is contained within its seemingly original and substantial stained pine frame with integral ebonised and gilt painted slip. The frame is in good condition with some scratches and scuff marks commensurate with its age.
Measures 17 3/4\" x 12 3/4\" (sight size) and 24\" x 19\" including the frame.
