Antique, fine quality,fancy Mexican TARDAN dark grey sombrero with a double front and back pattern horseheadinside a horseshoe hand embroidered gold pitiado hat band, circa 1920. Gold and silver pitiado was completely done by hand by skilled Artisans and is a lost art that is extinct from a very long time ago.

This sombreromeasures about 20 1/2\" measuring the curve from front to the back of thesombrero, and about 19 1/2\" side to side and is 7” tall. This sombrero ismade of high quality dark grey colored heavy felt, that is about 1/8\"thick with two small black eyelets on each side of the crease to add a stampedestring if desired for wear in Charita competitions where multiple women woulddemonstrate intricate riding patterns and also charreria’ (rodeo) skills. Notethat this size sombrero was also worn by men and was unisex. The black felt hatband is made of 2 hand embroidered Horseheads inside 2 large horseshoe patternsin what is described as gold bullion embroidery where thin flat gold threadswhere each strand is meticulously hand wrapped around cords in strands to formthe short gold strands that create the patterns. These horse head / horseshoe frontand back double patterns have fine detail such as tiny stitches to simulate thehorseshoe nail heads, and the horse is embellished with a different pattern of goldpitiado at the top, white & red (faded) stitching for the bridle and mouth,and white / black for the eye. Above the center panel is a wide row of thetraditional Aztec pattern, with each row hand wrapped to create gold pitiadostrands.  The top and bottom edges of theheadband are embellished with about 6 individual tiny strands of thin goldwrapped pitiado that is twist braided with another 6 individual tiny strands ofthin gold wrapped pitiado creating a 12-strand twist rope pattern borders. Thepanels to the right and left of the center horsehead / horseshoe pattens have agold pitiado horseshoes, gold pitiado leaves with multiple stems and goldsequins. Thin gold threads and tiny sequins turn dark from naturally occurringaging patina and are harder to see on a black background but are intact. Thereare 2 handmade gold pitiado complex intertwined knot decorations on the sides comprisingof 4 individual braided strands, ending in \"dingle balls\", shapeddecorations on each side of the crown that are found on high end Tardan sombreros.These are purely decorative and extremely fragile, not at all practical, andare intended to showcase the Artisans’ expertise. These side gold pitiado decorationsare in different styles. The knots have dozens of loops creating that resemble filigreeand have horizontal thread braiding that gives it one distinct pattern. The 4intertwined strands then separate into 2 double strands on both sides, eachwith a top collar with two layers of circular bundled tiny gold pitiado cordson top of a pinched round decoration with a distinctive straight-line goldpitiado decoration. Then, the bottom has 2 extremely thin and delicatestrands ending in a small barrel shaped decoration with straight line goldpitiado decoration. as above. These final “dingle ball” decorations are almostalways missing due to the impactable, minuscule 2 thin thread design, and theseare in original condition.

The originalinside liner appears to be off white silk (or possibly satin), with a Logo atthe top inside of the crown of the Tardan Charrita. The original 2 1/4\"wide tan leather sweatband has the traditional gold embossed Tardan makersmark, their trademark image of a Charrita, and also appears to be personalizedwith the recipient’s name. There is no size label, but the inside has a small bow ribbon with measurement front toback is about 7 5/8\" and about 6 3/8” side to side.

 Tardan is renown as the best Sombrero maker inMexico, with overall quality and look of a well-made sombrero in mint, originalcondition.  The last image is Tardan, Mexico City. Note that this sombrero has been a wall hanger, and the back sidehas accumulated a light dusting, and the black felt appears very slightly mutedin color vs. the front. This would be perfect for any Western, Old West,Western Americana, Charro, Charrita, Vaquero, Cowboy, Cowgirl, Hat, Sombrerocollection, or use as a decorator, costume or conversation piece for Cinco deMayo.
