Description

Pokémon TCG — Alakazam 1/110 | Legendary Collection (2002) | Reverse Holo

This is the reverse holo variant. Legendary Collection is the set that introduced the reverse holo to the English game, and it did so with a foil pattern that was never used again: a dense crosshatched “shattered glass” texture covering the card face around the artwork window, so the border, Pokémon Power panel, attack box and stat line all catch the light while the illustration sits flat at the centre. Nothing before or since looks like it in hand, and on this card it works especially well — Ken Sugimori’s Alakazam is already set against a dark swirl of psychic energy, so the sparkle frames it rather than fighting it.

Card number 1/110 — Alakazam opens the set, which gives it a standing among Legendary Collection collectors beyond its own merits. It is a reprint of the Base Set Alakazam, one of the most iconic cards of the original run, and it carries Damage Swap: the Pokémon Power that defined an entire era of competitive play, letting you shuffle damage counters freely around your board for as long as Alakazam stays healthy. Sugimori designed the Pokémon themselves and painted the Base Set classics, so his name is a draw in its own right.

Alakazam 1/110 is a Holo Rare in the base numbering, so the reverse holo sits at the top end of the set’s variant structure rather than being the reverse of a filler common. Reverse holo master-set builders need this card, and it is among the harder slots in that build to fill.

Two things make presentable copies scarce. The foil covers the whole face rather than a panel, so creasing, scratching and print lines show across the entire card and even well-stored examples routinely fall short of a high grade. And Legendary Collection was a Wizards of the Coast product released in 2002, near the very end of their licence, with a comparatively short print run before the licence passed to Nintendo; it has never been reprinted. Twenty-three years on, clean reverse holos from this set are expensive and getting scarcer — which is the point of this listing: a genuine Legendary Collection reverse holo Alakazam at a played price, with every flaw set out and photographed.

The layout is pure WOTC: red HP text, gold-framed artwork panel, flavour text boxed at the foot with the LV. 42 and #65 Pokédex reference — a design not used in the English game since 2003.

4. Card details
  • Stage 2 Psychic Pokémon, 80 HP, evolves from Kadabra
  • Pokémon Power — Damage Swap: as often as you like during your turn (before your attack), you may move 1 damage counter from 1 of your Pokémon to another as long as you don’t Knock Out that Pokémon; this power can’t be used if Alakazam is affected by a Special Condition
  • Attack — Confuse Ray (Psychic, Psychic, Psychic): 30 damage; flip a coin — if heads, the Defending Pokémon is now Confused
  • Weakness: Psychic | Resistance: none | Retreat cost: 3
  • Psi Pokémon, LV. 42, #65 | Length 4′ 11″, Weight 106 lbs | ©2002 Pokémon/Nintendo | Wizards of the Coast
5. Condition — Moderately Played

Every flaw is set out below, section by section, so you know exactly what you are buying.

The one thing holding this card back. There is a very small crease on the front, just below the top edge and immediately after the Pokémon’s name. It is individually photographed in the listing images. I want to be completely straightforward about it, because it is the sole reason for the grade: were it not for that one small crease, this card would comfortably be Lightly Played. Nothing else about it reads as a played card. anchors condition to the most significant flaw, a crease is a structural defect however small, and so Moderately Played is the honest call — but the card you receive presents far better than that label implies, and it is priced on the label rather than on the presentation.

Front — print lines: there are print lines running both vertically and horizontally across the face. These are factory printing characteristics rather than handling damage, and they are common on full-face reverse holos of this era, but they are visible under light and I would rather you saw them in the photographs than discovered them after delivery.

Front — surface: very, very light scratching. Minimal.

Front — corners: good. Sharp, with no softening or rounding.

Reverse — edges and corners: whitening to both, most prominent at the bottom-right corner.

Overall: the card is flat, holds its shape properly, and displays very well sleeved or in a page.

Photographs form part of the description. The listing includes the front from multiple angles, raking light across the foil so the surface and print lines can be properly assessed, a dedicated close-up of the small crease beside the name, the corners, and the whitening on the reverse. Please review them all carefully before buying — they are the definitive account of this card’s condition. I have not graded it and offer no prediction of what it would receive; please form your own view from the images. If there is any angle or close-up not already covered, ask and I will add it before you buy.

6. Please note

This is the reverse holo variant of Alakazam 1/110 from Legendary Collection — the crosshatch foil covers the card face around the artwork window. It is not the standard holo print of 1/110, where the foil sits in the artwork panel instead, and it is not the Base Set Alakazam, which shares the artwork and card text but has different set numbering and a different foil treatment.

7. Postage

Dispatched in two penny sleeves and rigid toploader, and sent within one working day of cleared payment.
