Margaret Julia Mitchell, “Maggie” (June 2, 1832 – March22, 1918), was an American stage actress in the later half of the nineteenthcentury.
She was a Southern sympathizer, and later a Unionist.
Maggie was one of actor John Wilkes Booth’s lovers.
She was so popular on stage that John Ford, of the Ford’s Theatre chain billed her as “MAGGIEMITCHELL-AMERICA’S FAVORITE!”
Her signature performance was in the role of Fanchon!
