Marie Catherine Laveau 12" , Voodoo Queen , Marie Laveau, Resin Figure Marie Laveau was born in the French Quarter of New Orleans, the daughter of the wealthy planter Charles Laveau and Darcental Marguetto. At the time of her birth, Louisiana was still administered by Spanish colonial officials. She was a beautiful young woman with black hair, a dark complexion, and a piercing gaze. She liked to cover her hair with a headwrap made of brightly colored fabric. She married a free Black man, Jacques Paris (also known as Jacques Santiago in Spanish records), an immigrant from Haiti.[1] As both were Catholic, they were married at St. Louis Cathedral. Yet, at the same time, it is said that both practiced Voodoo.
