Jagdgeschwader 71 (JG 71) “Richthofen” was one of the German Luftwaffe\'s most famous fighter units. The unit was established in 1959 and received its honorary “Richthofen” designation in 1961 in memory of Manfred von Richthofen, the legendary German First World War fighter ace.
JG 71 began operating the F-4F Phantom II in 1974, initially in fighter/bomber and attack roles before transitioning to a dedicated fighter role. The Phantom became an iconic part of the unit\'s history during its decades of Luftwaffe service.
