Thisis a very nice, full featured, large, working, antique musical cuckoo clock thatwasproduced about 60 years ago in the Black Forest of what was then, "Karlsruhe, West Germany" by "Albert Schwab," one of the best clock makers in this region of the world. The clock works well, keeps good time, cuckoos & chimes just as it should, animates correctly, and the Swiss music box plays the very popular tunes, "Black Forest Mill" (Muhle im Swarzwald) and "Blue Danube" (Blaue Donau) at the top and bottom of the hour as four colorful dance couples spin around the rotating dance platform! This clock is made from cured and aged Lindenwood which is grown nearly exclusively at certain altitudes of the Alps andBlack Forest. The carvings are deep and just stunning composing an oak tree complete with branches and ten large oak leaves and all is finished in a deep walnut finish; very nice! There is a large carved wooden rabbit mounted to left of the dial and a large carved game bird is located to the right. And there is a spectacular deeply carved wooden top complete with a deer head and antlers and two shotguns mounted in a criss cross fashion underneath. The dial has a brown background and features large,raised white Roman numerals to mark the hours and matching fancy hands to pointout the time. The country name, "Germany" is found on the lower dial. There is a fancy platform above the dial and it's lavished with colorful Edelweiss flowers. A rotating dance floor is just behind the platform complete with four colorful Black Forest couples in a dancing position. The back is actually a large wooden door that is secured with a metal latch. The door easilyremoves to allow access to the all metal, weight driven, very high quality mechanical movement produced by "Regula" and bears the Albert Schwab name and Karlsruhe, West Germany point of origin. Aweight driven movement simply means that thechains need to be pulledoccasionally to wind the clock, cuckoo, chime, animation and music. The bellowtubesare intact and the topslook good and make good cuckoo sound. At thebottomof each hour,acolorful bird opens thesmall wooden door above the dance floor and stands in the doorway. The bird gives offa single cuckoo sound in tandem with a coiled cathedral chime and when he's through, thebird returns to the safeconfinesof the clock,closing the door behind him. When he's comfortably the dance platform begins to turn and the dance couples twirl about as a high quality, Swiss music box plays a wonderful, very popular tune, "Muhle im Swarzwald" (Black Forest Mill). When the music is through, the dancers wait for the top of the hour. The bird returns at the top of the hour and correctly cuckoos and chimes the current number of hours and then returns to the confines of the clock. Once again the dance floor moves and the dancers spin about while the Swiss music box plays a lively rendition of "Blue Danube" (Blaue Donau), a very popular song. When the music stops, so do the dancers; this is absolutely fascinating! I'velooked the clock over fairly well and find less than average wear and no missing parts. I did find a small, hard-to-see crack on the upper part of the lower frame but frankly, it's not detracting; nothing could! The clock is very impressive and equally so in size measuring about 17 1/2" high (from the tip of the antlers to the bottom of the game bag and not countingtheweights or pendulum), about 8 1/2" or so deep, and about 9 1/2" at its widest point. Keep in mind that even though the clock looks fairly new, it is old though you'd never suspect it is a 60 year-old clock. It looks to have some maintenance to the movement in its lifetime but nonetheless, some adjustments orservice may be necessary once the clock arrives at its new home. We oftenrecommend to our clock customers to have their vintage or antique clocksserviced at least once every three years. Doing so will keep a classicclock like this one, healthy for years to come. The clock comes completeas shown with three sets of attachedmetal chains, a fancy, hand carved wooden oak leaf pendulum, and three heavy pinecone shaped metal weights. This clock is in a class all by itselfand is certain to be thefocalpoint of any collection.
