National Palace Hotel in Jerusalem Demitasse Cup & Saucer Set Maddock China Co.

Offered for your consideration is a very rare and stunning1928-1929 side logo ladies afternoon tea - after dinner / A.D. demitasse cup and saucer set made for the National Palace Hotel in Jerusalem. The cup measures 3-1/8\" to the tip of the handle and is 2-7/16\" tall. The saucer is 4-7/8\" wide.
In my opinion, this is probably one of the rarest pieces of hotel china to come from the end of the \"Roaring Twenties\" from the luxury hotels in Jerusalem.
This is the first demi set I have ever seen from this hotel. This is a pattern that does not surface often. Any piece in this early pattern is considered rare, but a demi set is something extraordinary.
If you collect high-end restaurant ware, historic Jerusalem antiques, or rare hotel china and hotel artifacts, you might want to consider this set for your collection.
Historically, work began on the National Palace Hotel in 1929 and was officially opened in 1929. It was owned by the Supreme Muslim Council in Jerusalem whom contracted withTurkish architects Ahmet Kemmaledin and Mehmed Nehad whom constructed it in a beautiful neo-Ottoman architectural style with blended in Greco-Roman and Moorish features. The hotel was constructed byTuvia Dunia and Baruch Katinka, whom had also built theShepherd Hotel in Sheikh Jarrah. The hotel was on Agron Street and was directly across from the famous and then very popular Mamilla Pool.
There was an urgency to get the hotel opened before the competing King David Hotel opened, and though the construction of the hotel lasted 13 months, it was considered a monumental feat to have constructed it that quickly. TheCouncil looked as the elaborate hotel as not only a major economic investment as a hotel for the multitude of tourist arriving in Jerusalem, but also as a major Arab national project.
When the Palace Hotel opened, it was considered one of the finest luxury hotels in the entire Jerusalem area. It featured luxury but then modern guest rooms, a beautiful parlor, an elaborate dining room, marble accents, and telephones in the guest\'s rooms. The hotel\'s staff was well trained, professionally, and the hotel operated almost just as one would expect to see in the United States.
In 1931, the Palace Hotel also was where the first Arab Exhibition was held. This was where industrial projects, agriculture, and other then modern processes of the Arab World were shown for those in attendance.

This particular backstamp of the John Maddock China Co. of England is one of their late 1920\'s era that reads \"ULTRA VITRIFIED\". This backstamp does not appear much (in comparison to the other John Maddock backstamp that does not have Ultra Vitrified markings), and from what I have learned, it appears that Maddock mostly used this backstamp / hallmark on hotel and restaurant ware that they were exporting out of England. The Ultra Vitrified was to convey how durable the hotel and restaurant china was.

It has not cracks or chips and little if any wear. Please study the photos and feel free to message me with questions.

You may wish to consider adding this lovely piece of historyto your hotel silver, silver soldered, heavyweight type steamship, hotel silver, or restaurant ware collection.
