This vintage chrome postcard showcases the iconic Natural Bridge of Virginia, one of the most celebrated natural wonders in the eastern United States. The front image beautifully captures the massive limestone arch — 215 feet high and 90 feet long — framed by lush green deciduous trees reflected in the calm waters of Cedar Creek below. A stone retaining wall and period building are visible at the lower right, lending a sense of scale and era to the scene. The reverse provides extensive historical context, noting that Thomas Jefferson purchased the bridge and 157 adjoining acres from King George III in 1774 for 20 shillings, and that George Washington surveyed the site around 1750, with his initials said to be carved 23 feet above Cedar Creek. A Henry Clay quote rounds out the description: \'The Bridge not made by hands, God\'s great stone masterpiece, spans a creek, carries a national highway and makes two mountains one.\' Produced by Prince Lithograph Co., Inc. of Arlington, Virginia, and distributed by Valley News Agency of Staunton, Virginia (catalog number PE-46), this card dates to the chrome postcard era, most likely the 1950s. The divided back is clean and unused, with no address, stamp, or message written. Condition is Excellent. The colors remain vivid and true, corners are sharp, and there is no foxing, creasing, or soiling present. A wonderful addition to any Virginia topographical or Famous Landmarks postcard collection.
