Neat Antique Victorian Vellum Indenture Lease Document London England:
$350.00

An extraordinary survivor of Victorian England, this original 1886 vellum property lease offers a fascinating connection to London\'s commercial history, the British aristocracy, and the extended family of Queen Camilla. The indenture concerns a commercial property located at 27 Crondall Street, London, and identifies its aristocratic owner as Henry Gerard Sturt, 1st Baron Alington (1825–1904). A prominent Victorian landowner, politician, and member of the British peerage, Lord Alington belonged to a distinguished family whose connections extended throughout England\'s landed aristocracy. Created Baron Alington in 1876, he was associated with Crichel House in Dorset and was known for his involvement in public life and country pursuits.
Particularly intriguing is Lord Alington\'s family connection to the modern British royal household. Through his descendants, the Sturt family became connected to Andrew Parker Bowles, the former husband of Queen Camilla. Lord Alington was an ancestor of Parker Bowles, whose marriage to Camilla from 1973 until 1995 produced their two children, Tom Parker Bowles and Laura Lopes. This fascinating genealogical connection gives the document an additional dimension of historical interest, linking a Victorian aristocratic property transaction to a family closely associated with today\'s British monarchy. The document itself is a wonderful example of the artistry and formality of nineteenth-century English legal instruments. Executed on traditional vellum, a durable material prepared from animal skin, the expansive sheet features an impressive calligraphic heading reading “This Indenture”, beautifully rendered in elaborate black Gothic-style lettering. Beneath the decorative title, the detailed legal text combines printed clauses with handwritten information recording the parties, property, and contractual arrangements.Fine red ruling surrounds the document, creating an elegant architectural framework for the densely arranged text. An especially interesting feature is the small property plan incorporated into the left-hand portion of the indenture, providing a visual representation associated with the premises described in the agreement. This unusual detail adds both historical significance and decorative appeal, offering a glimpse into Victorian property surveying and commercial leasing practices. The surviving red wax seals, embossed or printed revenue stamps, and handwritten signatures are among the document\'s most compelling features. These original elements reflect the formal procedures used to execute and document property agreements in Victorian Britain. Their vivid red coloration contrasts beautifully with the warm, naturally aged vellum, while the handwritten details and elaborate typography convey the remarkable care invested in official documents of the period.Measuring an impressive 27.25 inches wide by 21.25 inches high, this substantial legal document is more than 140 years old and represents a remarkable piece of English history, preserved with its original decorative lettering, official revenue stamps, wax seals, and period signatures. More than a century of history is visible in the surface of the vellum, with its characteristic folds, gentle undulations, and aged coloration contributing to its authentic antique appearance. The substantial dimensions and intricate layout make this an exceptionally decorative historical artifact, equally appealing to collectors of British legal documents, aristocratic memorabilia, London history, and Victorian ephemera. Good antique condition with signs of wear and handling, there are a few small holes inside to the creases from storage. Please review the photos for further condition assessment. The combination of beautifully aged vellum, dramatic calligraphy, red seals, and an aristocratic association gives the document the presence of an important archival object.
