Replica Neo-Assyrian Winged Guardian Bookends from the Metropolitan Museum of Art
In the palaces and temples of the Assyrian Empire, whichdominated northern Mesopotamia between the 9th and 7thcentury BCE, colossal sculptures of winged, human-headed lions and bullsguarded important entrances. These wingedfigures represented supernatural creatures whose powerful and often terrifyingappearances were thought to ward off evil spirits and monsters.
This pair of composition stone bookends, adapted from theoriginals, were made in the Reproduction Studio of the Metropolitan Museum ofArt. Because each figure is patinated byhand, no two pieces are exactly alike.
