The L-188 Electra is a turboprop airliner manufactured by the Lockheed Corporation. The Electra first flew in 1957. It was the first large turboprop airliner built in the United States. With its unique high power-to weight ratio, Allison 501-D13 engines with huge propellers, very short wings, large Fowler flaps which significantly increased effective wing area when deployed, the Electra had aircraft performance capabilities unmatched by many jet aircraft. Many are still in use today as freighters and in firefighting operations.
Northwest Airlines (NWA) was a major airline that operated in the United States from 1926 to 2010. It was founded on 01 September 1926 as Northwest Airways. It was also known as Northwest Orient Airlines and Northwest Airlines. The company had its headquarters in Eagan, Minnesota which was close to its home base, the Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport. On 31 January 2010, Northwest was merged with Delta Airlines. Northwest had 320 aircraft in service at the time of the merger. The majority of those were rebranded with the Delta livery and remain in service with Delta.
This aircraft (N123US) was delivered to Northwest on 11 August 1959. It provided service with Northwest until February of 1969 when it was sold to the San Diego Padres Baseball Organization. Through the years it provided service with Air California, Mandala Airlines (as PK-RLD) and finally ending up with Air Spray LTD (as C-FVFI) in August of 1995, where it flew until February of 2012 when it was taken out of service and placed into storage.
