An original posted postcard showing USS Detroit at anchor in New York Bay, with a sailing vessel beyond her bow. Copyrighted in 1905 by Enrique Müller, this atmospheric color image preserves one of the Navy’s early steel cruisers near the end of her career.
Commissioned in 1893, Detroit was a Montgomery-class cruiser that served during a turbulent period of American naval expansion. During the Spanish-American War, she participated in blockade operations and joined the American bombardment of San Juan, Puerto Rico, on May 12, 1898.
Her career also included operations during political unrest in Brazil, Nicaragua, Venezuela and Santo Domingo. Detroit was decommissioned in 1910 and sold in 1911.
