This original vintage Coca-Cola picnic cooler was manufactured by Progress Refrigerator Co. of Louisville, Kentucky during the 1950s. It features the classic red painted steel exterior with the white “Drink Coca-Cola” script logo, a galvanized metal interior, reinforced corner caps, hinged lid, large metal carrying handle, front drain fitting, and the original removable galvanized sandwich or snack tray.
The cooler measures approximately 18 inches wide, approximately 17 inches deep, and approximately 16 inches high at the body. With the large carrying handle raised, the overall height is approximately 20 inches.
A major feature of this example is the original removable galvanized sandwich or snack tray. The tray fits inside the upper portion of the cooler and was designed to keep food separated from the ice and bottled beverages below. It includes its original crossbar handle and lifts completely out to reveal the deeper galvanized ice compartment underneath.
The large external metal carrying handle folds down along the sides when not in use and also serves as part of the lid-retaining system. The original top handle, reinforced silver-tone corner pieces, drain assembly, and other visible hardware are all present.
The galvanized interior shows the heavy-duty utilitarian construction associated with these early portable Coca-Cola coolers. The removable tray and main compartment both show evidence of previous use, including oxidation, staining, and age-related patina. The bottom of the main compartment has a visible area of heavier staining and oxidation.
Condition is as seen in the photographs. The cooler shows substantial authentic age and use, including paint loss, scratches, scuffs, oxidation, surface rust, staining, and general wear throughout. The lid shows heavier oxidation and paint loss, while the sides retain strong red color and clearly visible Coca-Cola graphics. The bottom and exposed metal edges also show oxidation consistent with decades of use and storage. Please review all photographs carefully, as they are an important part of the description and show the condition from multiple angles.
The cooler has not been restored or refinished. Its worn original finish, surviving Coca-Cola advertising graphics, original hardware, galvanized interior, removable tray, drain, and large carrying frame give it the kind of untouched appearance many collectors prefer in vintage advertising pieces.
This is an excellent display piece for a Coca-Cola collection, vintage advertising collection, diner, general store, garage, restaurant, game room, or Americana display. The original removable sandwich tray adds significantly to its completeness and collector appeal.
