Each badge features an eight-pointed fluted military star surmountedby the Tudor / King\'s Crown.
The central circlet reads:
NORTHUMBERLAND REGT
with the Roman numeral:
XL
representing the 40th Regiment.
The lower scroll bears the regimental motto:
EXCELSIOR
Period Canadian militia regulations describe the NorthumberlandRegiment badge as an eight-pointed fluted military star with a circleinscribed \"Northumberland Regiment,\" the Roman characters \"XL\" in thecenter, the motto \"Excelsior\" below, and the Tudor Crown above.
The unit originated in 1866 as the 40th Northumberland Battalion ofInfantry and became the 40th Northumberland Regiment in 1900.
Both badges retain their two rear attachment loops/lugs.
