Pair Samson Paris porcelain figures of Ottoman Turkish Sultan & Sultana 19th C.:
$1250.00

Impressivepair of large-size antique hand-painted porcelainfiguresfor the Turkish market of a Sultan and his Sultana in traditional costumes by Samson, Edme & Cie, of Paris, France, with a painted pseudo Chelsea Derby mark painted in red, with Crown, crossed batons with 6 dots, and a 'D', on the underside of the base of the Sultana figurine.
These large 13 5/8 in. ht. porcelain figures, modeled as a Sultan and his Sultana (wife), are beautifully represented in the traditional costumes of the Ottoman empire, with folded turban headpieces, jewelry, ermine lined cloak, and ornately patterned silk fabric tunic, skirt, & lady's dress. Though bearing a red painted mark typical of the Chelsea Derby factory in England, these figures were most likely produced by Samson, Edme & Cie. of Paris, France in the 19th C. Samson was known for their high quality copies of earlier French, German, English, and Oriental porcelain figures.
It should be noted that there are some condition issues with both figures. There has been restoration and overpainting to the right hand of the Sultan and to the left hand of the Sultana, who also subsequently lost her thumb and forefinger. These could be restored by a professional porcelain restorer. The existing restoration to the hands is an older restoration and careful inspection reveals some change in color to the glaze in the restored areas. Carefully examine the photos and photo details in determining the condition of these figures. Only one figure bears the pseudo Chelsea Derby painted mark, the other figurine being unmarked.
Despite the loss of fingers and the restoration to the hands, these are important and rare figures and of an impressive scale. Similar figures have sold at Sothebys and other sale houses for thousands of dollars in the past.
