Historical Context
Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720–1778) was a famous Italian artist and classical archaeologist best known for his Vedute di Roma (Views of Rome), a series of dramatic and highly detailed etchings of the city\'s ancient and modern monuments.
The view on this card shows two iconic Roman locations side by side. The Campidoglio is the monumental civic piazza on the Capitoline Hill, famously redesigned by Michelangelo in the 16th century. Immediately adjacent is the Basilica of Santa Maria in Aracoeli, perched at the highest summit of the hill. The church is famous for its steep, 124-step marble staircase, which was constructed in 1348 to commemorate the end of the Black Death in Rome.
