Extremely rare 17th century candlestick attributed to France. This candle holder is a phenomenal example of the pronounced knop grouping of candlesticks.
A nearly identical example can be found on page 329 of the Lear Collection. This book showcases one of the greatest early socket candle collections ever amassed.
This particular example measures 7-1/4” tall with a base measuring 5-1/2” in diameter.
The base is wonderfully turned with a beautiful chocolate patina. The rest of the stick has a nice old polished surface. A original brass patch can be seen on the knop, showing the manufacturing process where in order to save material and lighten the stick, they inserted a core into the large knop to allow it to be hollow when casted.
This is truly an exceptional early candlestick, and a perfect example of the type.
