Lot of 2 Original Independent Republican Newspaper Subscription Receipts – Goshen, New York – 1833 & 1867
Offered is a wonderful pair of original 19th-century newspaper subscription receipts from Goshen, Orange County, New York, both issued for subscriptions to the Independent Republican newspaper.
The lot includes:
* February 7, 1833 subscription receipt issued in Goshen for a six-month subscription to the Independent Republican. Signed by H. H. Van Dyck.
* December 19, 1867 subscription receipt acknowledging payment for a one-year subscription to the Independent Republican. Signed by J. J. McNally (appears to read McNally).
These two documents span 34 years, offering a unique glimpse into the history of one local newspaper from the Jacksonian era through Reconstruction following the Civil War.
Both receipts feature period handwriting and original printing. The 1833 example is printed on early rag paper with simple typography, while the 1867 receipt features an attractive engraved blue border and decorative Victorian printing.
Condition:
