RARE 1944 WWII USAAF Chinese-English Medical Handbook Santa Ana Army Air Base.
Offered is an unusual original WWII-ERA Chinese-English medical handbook prepared at the Santa Ana Army Air Base Station Hospital in February 1944.
The foreword states that the handbook was intended to provide a practical vocabulary for use in the medical service between English - Chinese speaking personnel. It contains English medical and hospital terminology, phonetic / romanized Chinese pronunciation, Chinese characters, patient ~ history questions, examination terminology, sentences, and diet / food vocabulary.
The handbook is attributed to Robert A. Griesser, whose name is typewritten beneath an apparent handwritten signature on the foreword page. The same page has a handwritten presentation inscription at the top reading “For Albert”.
Particularly interesting is the handbook’s explanation of its simplified romanization system, based on Peking mandarin and specifically assigned for rapid practical use. Throughout the vocabulary are Chinese characters that appear separately handwritten or otherwise separately applied alongside the typewritten English and phonetic Chinese.
Handbook is in condition as expected for its age.
