📌 DESCRIPTION

Few Army positions carry the historical and institutional significance of the Sergeant Major of the Army. George W. Dunaway served as the 2nd Sergeant Major of the Army from 1968 to 1970, representing the Army’s senior enlisted leadership during the Vietnam War era. This shield-shaped coin directly honors that command legacy through the inscription “AWARDED BY SMA GEORGE W. DUNAWAY” and his designation as “2nd SERGEANT MAJOR OF THE ARMY.”

The front centers the distinctive Sergeant Major of the Army rank insignia over a red, white, and blue field filled with stars. Raised bronze-tone borders and lettering frame the shield, while the combination of enamel color and sculpted metalwork gives the rank device strong visual prominence.

The reverse incorporates imagery associated with the Sergeant Major of the Army positional flag, including a large central star, the United States Coat of Arms eagle, four surrounding stars, and the words “PROUD TO SERVE.” Together, the two sides create a highly recognizable tribute to Army senior enlisted leadership and George W. Dunaway’s place in the history of the SMA position.

The shield edges and detailed designs remain well defined, giving the coin strong overall presentation.

The unusual shield profile, prominent SMA rank device, and contrasting enamel fields remain especially effective when displayed upright.
