This is an EXTREMELY RARE ANTIQUE silver gelatin photograph taken by Edward S. Curtis (1868-1952) in 1900. This unframed original studio print is signed via the original studio stamps of Edward S Curtis and his studio assistant, Ella E. McBride along with the location “Wash.” (Washington) and date “1900”. It features a landscape orientation of a Native American hunting lodge teepee.
This 126 year old photograph has some old damage via vertical crackling in a couple of areas on the front (please see photos), but is otherwise in beautiful condition. Silver gelatin prints such as this made up less than one percent of Curtis’ prints and were considered Master Prints.
Edward Sheriff Curtis was known for photographing Native American tribes and created a vast visual archive of Native American life and culture. I have only found one example of this image online in the collection of the Monterey Museum of Art. The museum listing titles it “Nez Perce, Idaho”.
