A rare, quality stag scaled two blade pocket knife by Frank Mills of Sheffield. Mills initially worked as a stag scale cutter in Sheffield, starting his own firm around 1893 with two partners. That partnership was dissolved in 1897 and, in 1903, Mills took the company “Limited”. However, this knife is not marked “England” or “Made in England”, which would normally indicate production prior to the 1887 Merchandise Marks Act – but I can find no record of Mills working prior to 1887. Consequently, I believe this dates to the 1890’s and he omitted to include the required mark.
Measures approximately 3 1/2 inches long, overall, closed. Master blade measures approximately 2 5/16 inches long, edge only. Obverse tang stamped “Frank Mills Sheffield”. Pen blade measures approximately 1 3/8 inches long overall, closed. Obverse tang stamped “Frank Mills Sheffield”. Beautifully patina to gnarly stag scales secured by three pins, obverse with oblong shield, unengraved. Brass liners. Provided in a microfiber drawstring pouch.
Good snap to both blades. Blades with scratching and some signs of age wear. Scales good, no chips or racks. Light age staining to spring.
