RPPC Louis Pesha Photo Washington Street Scene-Lansing Michigan Posted 8-11-1910
For sale is a Real Photo Postcard of Washington Street in Lansing, Michigan, taken by Louis James Persha in the early 1900s. I have both past and current views of the block. The current Google Maps photo is for reference only and is not included in the sale. The Hotel Butler was demolished in 1950 and replaced by the J.C. Penney\'s building until 1981. The building was repurposed and now houses the Cooley Law School. The large, imposing six-story building visible further down the street in your postcard is the historic Hotel Downey. It stood as the undisputed premier destination in Lansing for several decades, anchoring the corner of South Washington Avenue and West Washtenaw Street. The building was eventually razed in the late 1930s and replaced by the building that housed Knapp\'s Department Store. Today, the landmark Art Deco Knapp\'s building still stands, beautifully restored, on that very corner, housing a mix of modern offices, lofts, and ground-floor retail space.
Condition: The real photo sepia postcard has staining, fading, foxing, and corner and edge wear. Printed at the bottom of the photo is \"7836 Washington St, Lansing, Mich Pesha Photo.\" There is a 1-cent Franklin stamp on the back of the postcard, with a faint cancellation mark from Lansing, Michigan, on Aug. 11, 1910, at 11:34 a.m. Also on the back of the postcard is a handwritten message addressed to \"Mrs. Earl Perry, 409 W 3rd Ave., Flint, Mich.\" from \"Marie.\" Dated Aug. 11, 1910. I have the Perry family tree attached in the photo section as well as, Sanborn Fire Map and newspaper articles of both Hotels Butler and Downey. Lastly, the back of that postcard also has staining and foxing. Please carefully review all photos for condition. The measurements are approximately 3.5 x 5.5 inches.
