Description
  • Overview: Outstanding antique undivided back Real Photo Postcard (RPPC) capturing a pristine street view of downtown Rio, Wisconsin, featuring the ornate Village Hall, Rio State Bank, and Hanson Bros. storefronts.
  • What It Shows: A detailed perspective looking down the main commercial district. Prominently showcases the newly built two-story brick Village Hall (dated 1904 in the parapet stonework) with decorative Romanesque arched window bays and roofline balustrade, followed by the classic columned facade of the Rio State Bank (established 1900) with striped awning, and Hanson Bros. general store with period fabric sun canopies and patrons seated on the front steps.
  • Historical Context: An essential historical visual record of Columbia County commerce at the turn of the century, illustrating Rio's civic and commercial growth following the turn-of-the-century brick reconstruction of its downtown business district.
  • Publisher / Studio: Real Photo Postcard (uncredited local photographer).
  • Postal History: Postally used during the Undivided Back era with a bold circular postmark from Rio, Wis. (Oct 24, 1906) tying a green 1¢ Franklin (Series 1902) stamp, accompanied by a clean Randolph, Wis. receiving datestamp (Oct 25, 1906). Period fountain pen note across the lower front margin: "may be I will be over after you Friday. I was down Sunday."
  • Condition Description: Very Good vintage condition. Remarkable photographic clarity, excellent midtones, and rich detail across all architectural signage and storefronts. Light edge rubbing and minor corner wear typical of postal handling; tiny fleck of surface wear on the upper parapet lettering of Village Hall. Reverse is clean and completely intact with crisp postal strikes.
