Historic 1932 Letter from Rabbi Samuel Schulman (Temple Emanu-El, NYC)

Addressed to Rabbi Winkler – Chief Rabbi of Copenhagen and Prominent Orthodox Authority

This is a rare and original 1932 letter, written in English on the official letterhead of Temple Emanu-El, New York, by Rabbi Samuel Schulman (1858–1938), one of the most prominent American Reform rabbis of his era. As senior rabbi of Temple Emanu-El, Schulman was a national figure in Jewish life—respected for his public scholarship, refined leadership, and advocacy for Jewish ethics, cultural identity, and interfaith understanding.

The letter is addressed to Rabbi Winkler, Chief Rabbi of Copenhagen, a major Orthodox Torah scholar and member of the Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah in prewar Europe. This correspondence represents a rare and respectful engagement between two leading rabbinic figures from opposite ends of the Jewish ideological spectrum, written in a tone of dignity and mutual recognition.
